8 The Real Praise And Worship

First and foremost, what you are about to read is what I believe in and mostly my opinion. I do not intend to offend anyone or persuade to believe what I think. I respect you for your beliefs and I expect you to do the same. I accept constructive criticisms as I believe everyone is entitled to their own opinions.

I have been thinking about this certain thing about church praise and worship for quite sometime now. As a matter of fact, it became more visible to me when I started this awesome task to lead the congregation for a few Sunday service when our worship leader attended a seminar. We can’t deny that sometimes (or perhaps most of the time) differences starts even inside the church(even though we are Christians) especially when it comes to music but like what I always think of – “there is no perfect church, because if there is one, then it is not a church it is “HEAVEN”.

In giving praises to God, there are people who prefer the old-fashioned, solemn, quiet, calm hymn-like songs and there are some which prefer the upbeat, fast, dancy-groovy kind of songs which makes them more involved when it comes to praise and worship. Being part of the worship team, I am torn between these two ways of giving praise to God. Let me point this out, what is “worship”? what is the proper way of worship? What is our goal for worship?

So, what is worship? If we would like to understand it in a definitive way, it is a way of communicating to God – simple as it is. If we would dig deeper and not just literally define it, worship is having a conversation, offering our sincere thoughts and proclaiming the awesomeness of God with pure humility and being happy about it. Sounds easy huh? Well what about doing it ?

Worship BG - Great is the Lord

So, what is the proper way of worship? Defining it is the easy part because it is like giving it a form or a category but it gets complicated if we would want to show the proper way of doing it. For me, everything that you do in accordance to God’s word is the proper way. We cannot say that God will only like if we sing solemnly or he will love us more because we are dancing in his presence, it’s actually seen by God in our hearts.Proper way of worship cannot be defined verbally or physically but instead it will be defined by how we submit ourselves in worshiping and how God can be glorified with sincerity. It does not say that we have to worship God in our way or worship him in his because this will just show that worshiping is one sided and biased. Like a magnet, it does not work on North Poles or South Poles only, it must be combined to work, so I can say that worshiping God needs our way and his way and through this a conversation is made.

Lay It All Down For The Lord

So, what is your goal for worship? Does this include self-righteousness? Do you want others to see how holy you are or perhaps how great in singing or dancing you are? If this is your goal, then I’m afraid you have the wrong goals. A true worshiper’s goal is – to please God because that is the reason why we do it in the first place. So if you see someone dancing and singing , let him be because it is him pleasing God. Just as him seeing you singing solemnly and calmly because that is you pleasing God. Don’t be distracted at what others do because by doing so you are already missing your goals.

There is no right or wrong when it comes to praising God. Whether it is lively or solemn, quiet or loud, modern or old-fashioned it will always be the same in front of God because what matters most is what He sees in your heart.

4 When Life Keeps Happening

Have you ever noticed that sometimes no matter how hard you try you still fail to achieve your goals. It seems like in whatever you do, there will always be failures and heartaches that stands in your way. I know that you can already see a glimpse of what you want from afar but in order for you to reach your destination there are some things you need to go through and experience even though you don’t want to but you have no choice because it is there.

This, my friend, is “when life keeps happening”. Frustrations, disappointments, trials, obstacles in life that you don’t want to experience but whether you like it or not, it is there. No other road to go through, trapped inside a tunnel and your only option is to go ahead or back out, what will you choose?

If you back out, there will always be a feeling of emptiness and regret but if you go on, there will always be a feeling of pain, confusion and suffering but as you look ahead you can see the light that will ease all these. You just have to go on, no matter what because these are all part of it, these are the reasons why there is light and these will be gone once you get out of the tunnel. Once you get past all these, it means your free, free from your fears, hesitations and sufferings. You will then realize that the light you saw is no other than your own aura, you are your own “light”.

2 An Afternoon Trip to the Farmer’s Market

organic1 organic4It was a Thursday afternoon, having a good weather and the craving for some unique pastry, my wife and I decided to visit the South Pasadena Farmer’s Market. There is never a bad time in visiting this place because of the friendly atmosphere, lots of fun activities, clean street foods of different specialties and culture and most of all fresh-organic fruits and vegetables that you can buy.

The venue is located at the Meridian Avenue and El Centro just adjacent to Metro Gold Line Station in South Pasadena. They closed down the intersection of both streets every Thursdays at 4pm. Finding the place is easy as it is at the heart of the small town, the only problem that you will encounter here is looking for a parking space. Since this is also a residential area, street parking is the only option for its patrons. There are a few small parking lots that you can use if you’re lucky enough.

As you enter the market, you will find different varieties of food that are being sold under the tent stalls like organic fruits and vegetables, different spices and even breads. There is also a sample table for the fruits that they sell that looks like a salad bar.

If you get hungry strolling around or if you want to take home some foods for your family, there is also a part of the farmer’s market that looks like a food court where you can find different foods that you won’t normally see at home nor at a few fancy restaurant.

An example of this is the “Pupusas” , a grilled pastry filled with meat of your choice. I ordered Pork-Beans & cheese and Beef & Cheese with a matching Raspberry Lemonade, a very good combination on this mild-hot weather.

children's place

If you have little ones tagged along with you, there is also a place at the side that looks like a park where families gather around and have some picnics. This is also a spot where the children play with other kids or watch a person making animals with balloons. On this spot, you can also have some good relaxing music from street performer’s at the front.

This place may be crowded a little bit, but it doesn’t matter because nothing beats the experience of not having a dull moment whenever you’re here.

0 Five – 4th of July Events To See In Los Angeles

In two more days the whole nation of the United States will celebrate one of its monumental holidays, the 4th of July – Independence Day. Have you made any plans on how and where to celebrate this wonderful tradition with your families, loved ones and friends? If not yet, here are my 5 suggestions that you might consider on how to make this day a memorable one:

• Watch a special concert at The Hollywood Bowl.

If you are a fan of Classical Pop, you might want to check out Josh Groban and the Los Angeles Philharmonic this 4th of July for they will be having a special concert at this venue and you will also get to watch a fireworks display at this event.

• Have a day full of fun-filled family activities in a patriotic way at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library.

Ronald Reagan Presidential Library has its own Annual 4th of July celebration that has patriotic concerts, family games (sack race, ring toss, etc.), featured presidential re-enactments , some arts and crafts and also get to see the Air Force One up close. It might be a 1 hour drive from Los Angeles but I am sure it’ll be worth it.

• “Celebrate Independence Day in style” (as what their slogan says) by visiting The Queen Mary.

Get on board this big ship that is also a hotel! That’s right, this is also a hotel. You get to enjoy family friendly music and entertainment, explore the ship and experience the wonder of it’s fireworks display. List of activities can be seen here, that will last the whole day up to the night.

• Experience the “Americafest”, 4th of July celebration being held at The Rose Bowl Stadium.

Family fun activities include crafts, exhibits, rides for the kids and the much awaited fireworks display that will start at 9PM. This is a 30-minute show that will light up the night and I’m sure you don’t want to miss this. Details of the event can be seen here.

• Spend the 4th of July at the Huntington Beach.

When I say Huntington Beach, it’s not just about swimming on the 4th of July, you also get to see the famous Huntington Beach Parade, the Surf City 5K Run & Fitness Expo and the Fireworks Over the Ocean display that would start in the evening. This is a whole day event and you need to go there early if you plan on doing this activity because I am sure there will be lots of people out there. Details of the event can be seen here.

0 Life After The Calendar, It’s Not As Bad As It Looks

“Life begins at 40”, I always wonder what’s the reason behind this phrase or is it even logical to believe in this. Is it just a state of mind that when you reach forty, it will be more lively, you will be more free? Or perhaps you are in self-denial because you know for a fact that you are getting old.

I am not forty yet but there comes a time that I even dreaded reaching the age of 30. Like what my friends say, “malapit na lumagpas sa kalendaryo”( almost exceed the calendar ). Why is that? Honestly, because I had this thought that I am getting old and I would not be able to do the things that I usually do like partying, hooking-up, drinking till you drop. I hate the thought of “sense of maturity will steal my fun”. I reached 30 and yes all those went away but I am still happy with my life right now because I have a family that makes me complete and I can still do the things that I want to do with the company of my friends even though it is on a different aspect. Turns out, It’s not bad after all!!! It’s a whole new different level but trust me, nothing to be dreaded about, nothing to be worried about. It is what I will call “an application from what I have learned when I was young”.

Now, I am in my mid-30’s and I am again on the thought of nearing forty but this time I am not afraid of it nor even in self-denial. I am just preparing myself to accept what is yet to come and even thinking of what to do when I reach that age. I know for a fact that I don’t want to be a “Dirty Old Man”, I just want to be a cool dude that is not trying hard and this time it will be “an application from what I have learned when I was a young-adult”.
